Those of you who been readers of my essays know we have a dog. His name is Jake. Some of this essay may be familiar to you but I am writing about Jake again because tomorrow June 17 will be Jake's thirteenth birthday.

Jake will be 13 which is the equivalent of 91 in human years. Any way you look at it, Jake is not young anymore. Jake still does seem young. When many people meet him, they think he is a puppy.

Jake is a Havanese. Havanese are pretty small dogs. Jake weighs about 14 pounds.

Many people love dogs. Dogs and humans have been companions for thousands of years. Dogs are loyal They give unconditional love. They provide emotional support. They can enhance social interaction. Dogs can contribute to a person's physical and mental well-being.

There are a few things you should know about Jake. He does not have any money. Not one single dime. Jake is tapped out. That's the way it is with most dogs. We have to pay for everything he needs. Food, snack, bones and toys. Not to mention the Vet, Groomer, and medicine.

Jake does not have a cell phone or computer. We have to make all his appointments. He does not keep a calendar. We have to remind him, Jake you are going to the groomer today and we will drive him and pick him up.

He has friends but we make his play dates. He won't go if it is too windy outside then we have to cancel his plans.

Jake is good at communicating. If he is looking at the door he has to go outside. When he looks at the fridge, he wants to eat. How about some chicken broth.

Jakes birthday is June 13 except at CVS. They keep all dog's birthdays filed under 01/01. That can be confusing.

Tomorrow Jake will be 13. He is not getting any younger but either are we.

What Jake gives us money can't buy. He is always glad to see us whether we are gone five minutes or five days. When we return, he is happy. No questions ask! He is protective and concerned. He knows if something is wrong. He is on duty 24/7. So are we.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAKE AND MANY MORE!
