THE SECOND TUESDAY IN JULY
In 1953 we moved into our new house located at the far corner of northwest Detroit. This was a new area actually still partially surrounded by woods. A section of those woods was soon cleared and developed into a new park. We lived in the second house from the corner very close to the new park. The new Vandenberg Elementary School was under construction on the outskirts of the park and opened in the winter of 1954. I was there the first day it opened. The park was called Coms

FAN MAIL
Regarding my recent essay called "It was a night game", a loyal reader wrote and ask me why I just did not go downtown and wander the streets at 12 years old until it was time to attend the 8:00 P.M. game only eight hours later. Following the game at about 10:30 I could have walked the quarter mile to the bus stop and hoped the busses were still running that late. If the busses were still running that time of night, I could have rode home through the streets of Detroit till a

IT WAS A NIGHT GAME
I was about 12 years old in the late 1950's. During the summer I would 0ccasionally go to a Detroit Tiger afternoon game with a buddy. We lived at the far corner of northwest Detroit. The trip to the stadium took about one hour by bus. It required taking two busses to what was then still called Briggs Stadium. The name was changed to Tiger Stadium in 1960. I called my friend and made plans to go to the game that afternoon. We would catch the bus at the corner of Greenfield an

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAKE
Those of you who been readers of my essays know we have a dog. His name is Jake. Some of this essay may be familiar to you but I am writing about Jake again because tomorrow June 17 will be Jake's thirteenth birthday. Jake will be 13 which is the equivalent of 91 in human years. Any way you look at it, Jake is not young anymore. Jake still does seem young. When many people meet him, they think he is a puppy. Jake is a Havanese. Havanese are pretty small dogs. Jake weighs ab

DETROIT TIGERS WIN 5 OF 6 GAMES
The Detroit Tigers finished the week yesterday Sunday June 7, 2026 with a win over the Seattle Mariners 5 to 4. The game was won in the ninth inning on a hit by star rookie Kevin McGonigle. The Tigers now have a record of 27 wins against 39 losses. They are 9 1/2 games out of first place in the Central division and have a 409 winning per centage. A LITTLE DETROIT TIGER TALK
Monday morning June 1,2026. Watched three Tiger games over the weekend. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Tigers lost all three games. They lost Friday by a score of 4 to 3. Saturday's game was lost 7 to 1 and Sunday's game was lost 4 to 3 in ten innings. You can quickly see the Tigers are not scoring many runs. I'm sure you are very aware the Detroit team is not having a good season. The season is now two months old. The Tiger's have played sixty games. They still have 102

THIS IS NUMBER 55!
Sunday May 16,1971 was a very warm and sunny day. Why do I remember what the weather was like on that specific day? It was the day we were married. We got married in the afternoon at a popular hotel in downtown Detroit. This Saturday May 16,2026 will be fifty-five years since that very warm Sunday afternoon. Being married fifty-five years is a pretty big milestone. A lot of people do not reach that milestone for a number of reasons. First, you have to be lucky and live long

WE WANT TO GO TO THE MOVIES
I have always been a movie fan. Usually saw a couple of movies a month if not more. Going to a movie was a night out. A way to escape for a couple of hours. Spend some time with friends. Take a date. Take your wife out and leave the kids with a sitter. The year 2020 brought the Covid Virus. People had to stay home. Movie theatres like many other business's had too temporarily close. When the epidemic ended not all theatres were able to reopen. People did not rush back to tho

REMEMBERING THE 1968 DETROIT TIGERS
0n July 20,1969 the first astronauts landed on the moon. It was a great achievement! In October of 1968 another great event took place. The Detroit Tigers won the World Series The Tigers had not won the world series since 1945. Twenty-three long years. They had not won in my lifetime. Twenty-Three years seemed like a very long time. It does not seem so long today when I realize it has been forty-two years since they have last won the series in 1984. The team had a record in 1

GOING TO THE MOON
The first moon landing took place on Sunday July 20,1969. The three astronauts on that historic flight were Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Mike Collins. Neil Armstrong was the first human to walk on the moon. The landing was seen all over the world on television. Most of those television sets were black and white with screens that were a lot smaller than the ones many people have today. The first words spoken on the moon by Neil Armstrong were "that's one small step for man
