Time seems to move faster as one grows older. There are a number of theories why this happens. These are a few of the possibilities.

Day to day experiences become routine and familiar. When things become routine and repeated over and over time will seem to pass at a quicker pace.

As one grows older each year becomes a small percentage of your life making it seem like the year went by faster.

The body and brains chemistry changes as a person begins to age. This could make it seem as if time is moving faster.

There are a number of other theories about time moving quicker as life moves on. The fact is if one feels time is moving at a quicker pace as they grow older it is true. Perception is reality!

During the past one or two generations it became common for people to say things such as, forty is the new thirty or fifty is the new forty and so on. I guess this became popular to say because many people seemed to look younger at a certain age than people of the same age in previous generations. This could have happened because of a more comfortable life for a number of people. Better diets, better health care and modern medicine. Maybe regular exercise or more youthful fashion trends.

Over the years I would hear people say, I can't believe I'm turning forty or reaching fifty I'm getting old. Personally, those years did not bother me. What I did hear someone say on television one day that stuck with me was, seventy might be the new sixty, but eighty is still eighty!

About one year ago as I approached eighty that comment stuck with me. Eighty is still eighty. The feeling that you cannot deny at eighty you have reached a certain stage in the cycle of life. It bothered me for a while. It was almost hard to say. When I would say I'm eighty I would think is that really me.

A little time went by I started to feel a little different. It almost felt like a new confidence. That's right I'm eighty. I have a lot of experiences many other people have not had. Some were good and some not so good, but I survived them. Being eighty felt like an accomplishment. Something to be proud of having reached.

As I said earlier in this essay it seems that time passes much quicker as one gets older. I got up one recent morning and looked at my calendar. I realized another year had passed at warp speed. Once again, it was my birthday. Suddenly it came to me I don't have to feel anxious about turning eighty anymore. I'm eighty-one.

I'm not eighty and will never be eighty again.

Funny, how life works!
