SUITS,TIES AND DINOSAURS

In the 1987 movie Wall Street, Gordon Gekko played by award winning actor Michael Douglas a wealthy, unscrupulous, corporate raider tells Bud Fox a young stockbroker played by Charlie Sheen who is trying to do business with Gekko to buy some decent suits. While having lunch together at a high-end mid-town Manhattan restaurant Gekko tells Bud Fox, you can't come in here wearing those cheap suits. Gordon Gekko tells Bud Fox go see Morty my tailor, tell him I sent you and buy some decent suits.

That movie was made in 1987 thirty-nine years ago. Suits and ties were very important to many people if they worked on Wall Street or many other places. They projected confidence and authority. It was a way of showing respect for the customer, the client, the patient. The suit and tie said I am a professional, I am knowledgeable, I am somebody you want to do business with.

Just a few years later something began to change. Somewhere someone came up with the idea of making Friday's business casual day. Someone once told me the day that happens, we will be on the slippery slope. He was right! Before long it became business casual every day. Fridays became just casual day as opposed to business casual. Casual meant jeans, t-shirts ETC. were ok on Friday's. The years moved on a new generation was entering the work force. They embraced the casual look. They believed that society no longer appreciated the formal look. The new values said people now appreciate, comfort, authenticity, and a rejection of the elitism that the suit and tie era had represented.

We entered the era of wear whatever you want any day, anytime, anyplace.

Something called Covid came along. People were now told stay at home. Work from home if you can. You can work from home you can sit on your bed and work in your pajama's.

When the Covid era ended some thought people would be happy to get dressed up and go back to the office. The suit and tie era that was considered the appropriate way for people in the business world to dress for many generations would return. That has not been the case. Some people did not want to return to the office and if they did they certainly did want to get dressed up.

On recent survey said about sixty-nine percent of men say they never wear a suit to the office anymore. The rest said they wore a suit maybe once or twice a week to work.

Let's take another walk down memory lane. Here's a list of some handsome and famous men who were considered among the best dressed actors. I have also included the names of some the movies they were in if anyone wants to see how they dressed which might inspire motivation to dress up a little.

These actors looked pretty good in suits and ties. Getting dressed once in a while never hurt anyone. We don't want to live in a world where the suit and tie goes the way of the dinosaur.
