The N.F.L held its championship games this past Sunday. The Seattle Seahawks beat the L.A. Rams and will go to the Super Bowl for the 5th time. {I hoped Matt Stafford and the L.A. Rams would win.}

In the A.F.C. the New England Patriots beat Denver and will play in the Super Bowl for the 12th time.

The Detroit Lions did not make the playoffs this season and once again will not be in the Super Bowl. The first Super Bowl was played in 1967. The Lions have never played in the big game.

The Lions said after this past season they will make some changes in the offseason. They said " The team will be better in the future".

I can hardly wait!

Sonny Elliot reported the weather on local television and radio in Detroit for fifty years. He began in the very early days of T.V. He did the weather every night at 6:00 and 11:00. He reported the weather without all the fancy technology they use today. Sonny was also an entertainer. Every night he included some jokes with his weather report.

He told what the next day's temperature would be. He mentioned if it would be cloudy or sunny and if there would be any rain or snow. The whole thing took him about five minutes including jokes and a commercial. Most people liked Sonny.

This winter has been very cold and snowy. This past weekend some very bad weather was going to affect a number of states. Watching and listening to the coverage of the weather recently made me think of Sonny.

I think most people know if it is going to be very cold, they should wear very warm cloths. They also should know that they should drive very carefully when the roads will be slippery. Possibly even stay home in bad conditions.

I would guess that there have been many bad winters throughout history in cold weather states. I am not sure all people reporting the weather know this. Whenever there is going to be bad weather, they insist on using words like catastrophic, extremely dangerous, or record breaking. Worst storm in one hundred years is another favorite. Reporters will be using all kinds of high tech equipment to report the weather and make scary predictions. Reporters will run all over the streets showing how much snow is falling.

I think what they are doing is adding a lot of stress for people with this dramatic style of weather reporting. In the world we are living in people are already feeling a lot of stress every time they hear the news. The weather can be reported without adding to that stress.

Sonny Elliot reported the weather for fifty years. People got the message. Nobody came away stressed after listening to his report. When you heard his weather report you got the information you needed.

You probably walked away feeling good with a smile on your face!
