THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS ON A TUESDAY

Daylight savings time. We turned the clocks back one hour this past weekend. This was an idea that started in the late 1890's. Someone decided this would save fuel and that people would enjoy an extra hour of sunlight certain times of the year. Move the clocks ahead in the spring and move them back one hour in the fall. Surveys show that most people find the time change annoying and tiring. People don't seem to care about the benefits of time change and would like to see it end. I believe this would take an act of congress. Congress has said they are interested in looking into this matter when they have the time.
The World Series ended this past weekend. The L.A. Dodgers won the series in seven games. Both these teams played excellent ball in my opinion. The series went down to the wire. Either team could have won. The Dodgers took it in the end. I think it will be considered one of the best World Series in the history of Baseball.
Halloween was last Friday night. It seems that Halloween has been getting more and more popular each year. It seems that we now have the Halloween season with more decorations being displayed earlier each year. People of all ages seem to enjoy the holiday. Various Halloween celebrations such as parties and other gatherings. What we did notice and people in other areas have confirmed this there were actually less trick or treaters on Halloween than in the past. This could be because of all the Halloween activities in advance of the actual day that the usual night of trick or treating has become a little anti climatic. The local news usually has a story before Halloween about some concern about some treats somewhere being contaminated with one thing or another. This always causes parent's concern which might be another reason for a smaller turnout. That being said most kids and adults seem to really enjoy the day. I hope everyone had a very nice Halloween!
I often hear the comment by business owners or managers "you can't find good help anymore." I have often thought that maybe the problem is not the help. The problem could be that some of the owners don't want to take the time or spend the money to hire, train and properly compensate the new employees. The last few days I visited some stores that don't appear to have this problem. I do not have any financial interest or own stock in any of these companies. We like to shop at Trader Joes's. Stores are always well stocked. Seem to always have plenty of employees. The employees are always very helpful, polite, and friendly. Just down the street from the Trader Joe's that we usually shop is a market called Nino Salvaggio just like the Trader Joe's they also have well stocked stores. Knowledgeable and friendly employees. We bought a new cell phone recently. We went to the Apple store at the mall. Again, the employees were very polite, knowledgeable, helpful and patient! These are just a few examples of stores with good help. This is not an accident. It all starts at the top!
A couple of other thoughts. I think many people find roundabouts that were built in some areas to replace stop lights difficult to deal with.
I have been watching football for a very long time. Went to my first Detroit Lions game in the mid 1950's. Have watched many on T.V. and listened to them on radio going back to the 60's. Everyone knows the have never gone to the Super Bowl. The last few seasons they have had some pretty good teams but still no cigar. They have a very large following in the Detroit area who are always very hopeful each year that "this could be the year." I hope it comes true but to be honest I can't seem to get that interested in them this year. I guess I have just heard it said to many times "that this is the year." Again, I hope it is but personally I guess I really don't care
Once again, remember it all starts at the top!
